Many users have experienced situations where a newly installed firmware update results in the printer LCD displaying: "Cannot recognize ink cartridge. Please replace."

How Smart Chips and Firmware Authentication Work

Every genuine Epson ink cartridge contains a tiny microchip (EEPROM) that communicates cryptographically with the printer's motherboard. The chip tracks remaining page yields, ink droplet consumption, and serial validity.

How to Disable Automatic Background Firmware Updates

If you prefer full control over when firmware is updated on your cartridge-based printer, you can turn off automated checks using Epson Software Updater:

Launch Epson Software Updater from your computer.
In the bottom-left corner of the main window, click on "Auto-Update Settings".
In the interval dropdown menu, change the setting from Every Day or Every Month to Never.
